I have always been fascinated by stories of people who manage to turn their lives around. I’ve always sought to understand how some people can achieve drastic leaps of improvement and become a magnet for abundance in their lives while the most of us struggle on by.

Since stumbling across Personal Development content covering the power of the mind, I’ve been drawn into gaining distinctions on how to harness the power of our mind and energy.

I’ve since learnt that there are just a few key concepts and philosophies to grasp when its comes to success. These concepts and philosophies have existed for centuries but each author has their own way of illuminating the concepts through words or images. Different authors will appeal to different people and understanding each concept from different perspectives can make all the difference.

The Magician’s Way is a fictional story elucidating 7 ‘secrets’ to transforming one’s internal and external world. Below is the summary of the 7 secrets. If any point intrigues you, I recommend reading the book to gain the full lightbulb moment.

The first secret – Your thoughts and feelings aren’t real

Your thoughts and feelings are an expression of your underlying assumptions in any moment, not a reflection of actual reality or what is truly possible

The second secret – Your focus creates your reality 

Your experience in life is determined by what you put your attention on. If you focus on end results you inevitably attract what you want. If you focus too much on what you have to do to get what you want you end up attracting your doubts, fears and beliefs.

The third secret – Everyone has a heart.

Having a heart means that you do have dreams, that there are things you love, things that are deeply important to you. An inherent part of the human journey is that at some point you end up putting more energy into protecting your heart than going for it.

The fourth secret – There is never anything to do, but always action to take.

‘Action’ is about taking direct steps, based on the obvious, towards creating what you want. ‘Doing’ is about fulfilling certain conditions you believe are necessary before you can get what you want.

The fifth secret – Structure has integrity.

Something’s structure dictates its behaviour, and its behaviour dictates its experience. In creative terms, what your attention is focused on form the underlying structure in your consciousness. The motivations behind what you do in life reveal your true focus.

The sixth secret – You get your energy from a higher source.

As a human being, you have the tendency to develop fixed concepts about what is in your highest good and where it is supposed to come from. The key to magic is developing the ability to let go of your fixed concepts and open up to the true source of your energy.

The seventh secret – It takes will.

Ultimately, your highest source of energy is your own heart. Yet, the paradox is that you are conditioned to protect your heart, a behaviour motivated by fear. Your fears are communicated to you by thoughts and feelings. There can be no sustainable change in your experience of life unless you have the will to choose going for your heart resolving your thoughts and feelings.

Follow your bliss

Joseph Campbell, who coined the phrase “follow your bliss” in the early 1900s, was a graduate student at Columbia University. His blue flame, he decided, was the study of Greek mythology. When he was told there was no such major, he devised his own plan.

After graduation, he moved into a cabin in Woodstock, New York, where he did nothing but read from nine in the morning until six or seven each night for five years. There isn’t exactly a career track for lovers of Greek myth. Campbell emerged from the woods a very, very knowledgeable man but he still had no clue what to do with his life. He persisted in following his love of mythology anyway.

The people who met him during this time were astonished by his wisdom and passion. Eventually, he was invited to speak at Sarah Lawrence College. One lecture led to another, until finally, when Campbell looked up one day twenty-eight years later, he was a famous author and professor of mythology, doing what he loved, at the same school that had given him his first break. “If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living.”

So how do you figure out your bliss?

Campbell believed that deep within each person, there’s an intuitive knowledge of what she or he wants most in life. We only have to look for it.

The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod – Book Review

I seem to be on a roll with miracle mornings. I have picked up sign after sign to have better mornings and it has been such a blessing.

Your mornings set the tone for the day and the strong benefits of developing morning habits is something you can only experience by taking action. i.e. do it, commit to it and discover the benefits for yourself. Merely reading a book won’t really change much for you.

I have high recommendations for the book because the strategies worked well for me – at least the ones I implemented. While I struggled initially to get a new morning routine in place, it took no longer than a week for me to settle in and wake up earlier to practice my morning miracle routine.

What I love most about the book is that it contains an actionable strategy. Plainly – S.A.V.E.R.S or Silence – Affirmations – Visualisation – Exercise – Reading – Scribing.

Structure is so important in developing new habits and making them stick. I believe that is a strong reason why so many people have managed to implement and get positive results.

I love that Hal also keeps the door open for his audience to make it a really simple and quick routine, for those that are not used to getting up early or having morning routines. He suggests that the whole routine can be condensed into a few minutes, which can be a great way to start.

Beyond that, the activities in the morning routine are highly effective. That would be the undoubted reason why the book has such great feedback. It simply works. The psychological and mental benefits of the strategy works in silent ways but naturally makes you want more of it. Sooner than later, a miracle morning routine becomes ingrained into your daily life.

This is a great book for beginners who do not yet have a morning routine. The structure makes it so simple for anyone to implement and get results from. The tips and explanations will also guide someone through the purpose and implementation of each activity.

However, the book may not be the complete stunner for those that have already researched into their own perfect morning routine. The S.A.V.E.R.S strategy can also be implemented and understood on a deeper level factoring in personal thought and behaviour patterns. There are different ways to practice silence (believe it or not) and some could be more powerful than others depending on the individual. Some methods of implementation I’ve come across include focusing on breath, focusing on a single object, noticing sounds around you, etc.. For exercise, different individuals may choose to develop their exercise activity differently depending on specific health or fitness goals they may have.

The book is kept simple to understand and implement on broad terms but may lack the depth for those looking to sharpen or improve their morning routine.

Another aspect to having a MIRACLE morning routine, I believe, also depends on the individual’s clarity on their goals and purpose. The book delves into this factor but it deserves to be reinforced. Directing the S.A.V.E.R.S strategy towards a clear purpose and goal can set the stage for real miracles.

This book is highly recommended for anyone who does not yet have a morning routine. The simple steps and strategy will deliver results for those seeking greater energy and productivity in their lives. It excites me to know that this handbook exists to get people on the path of leading happier and more fulfilled lives through having great mornings. I will certainly recommend them to peers, friends and family looking for that morning breakthrough.

4.30am Miracle morning

I’ve had one of the best mornings ever just today!

I had an early start at 4.30am (a full hour before my alarm goes off), knocked out my basic morning routine, some work and then my fitness routine. It was only 7am then. I rarely have such focus and clarity – I usually spend an extra hour getting distracted on social media and only get my exercise done by 8 or 9am)

Another surprising observation was, my mind was particularly calm and quiet during my exercise. I get the highest flow of ideas when I’m working out. The thoughts that come to me are usually things that occupy my mind most heavily & dictate my emotional state. I may be conscious of some of those thoughts, but the most interesting ones are the subconscious thoughts that rise up.

During physical exercise is when I’m probably closest to being hyper-alert. Not just my mind, but my body too, feels more sensitive to its surroundings – from internal muscle movements, to moving insects in the garden (if that is where I choose to work out).

I was very surprised by the serenity and peace in my mind. The only way I can describe it, is empty. As much as I looked, there were no thoughts. This is very unusual for my buzzing brain. It felt surprisingly good. I relaxed into it, I smiled and enjoyed the emptiness.

I am no scientist, or detective but here’s my best explanation of the higher level of focus and clarity I experienced this morning – I spent 2.5 hours relaxing at the beach yesterday.

I love the water. I love being in the ocean. I love waves (when they are not too rough) and the swooshing sound they make. The conditions were perfect yesterday.

I listened to an audio book of ‘the miracle morning’ while I basked in the sun. (Perhaps the audio book had something to do with my ‘miracle morning’ too.)

For those 2 hours, the rest of the world faded away and my physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual batteries were fully recharged.

It feels good. It feels so good to live life with your batteries recharged. It feels even better to have focus, clarity and move with efficiency.

Here’s what I know about relaxation, self love and self care:

  1. Set the intention to totally break away from your daily life. Imagine it was your last day on earth. What would you want to do, how would you want to feel?
  2. Understand yourself – what activity relaxes you the most? A game of soccer? A nourishing brunch? Some music and a nap? Indoors or outdoors? I did my own trial and error to find which activities suited me.
  3. Don’t be afraid to go solo. I love hanging out with my friends. But sometimes, self care is watching a geeky movie all by myself because I may want to pause and replay certain bits.
  4. Time out feels well deserved when you’ve earned it. Give yourself time out as a reward when you’ve achieved your planned tasks/goals for the day. It gives you permission to walk away from your work without guilt and to fully immerse in FUN knowing that you’ve kept your promise to yourself.

This serendipitous morning has given me so many insights on applying intentional relaxation and self care in one’s life. I am so grateful and I hope it has given you some good ideas to implement in your own so you can create your own miracle mornings too.

How to deal with haters & critics..??

I love haters, negative comments, critics… etc. They are a great source of entertainment for me these days.

Care about what other people think and you will always be their prisoner.I completely understand the anxiety, fear, anger and frustration of receiving negative comments or reviews. I’ve totally been there when my confidence was still very vulnerable to these trolls. It does take all your esteem to the dumps, and you question everything about yourself.

It’s crazy to think someone so insignificant in our lives – some random person in the public who probably really didn’t think about their comment/review for more than half a second – can completely ruin our mental state with a few words. I’ve been there.

And then there’s the process of rebuilding your esteem – with positive self talk, peer support, positive content and other reinforcements. It’s a real roller coaster to be on.

I am glad I am largely over that hump and would love to see more people getting over theirs too.

 

Here’s the big realisation for me. If you don’t have haters, you ain’t nobody. The more authority you desire as an individual, the more lives you want to touch & impact, the more value you want to provide as an individual or business, the bigger waves you want to create in your community, the more negative feedback you can expect.

You’re probably doing something right if you have critics and probably not enough if you don’t have your fair share of trolls/critics. #sorrynotsorry for being blunt.

Not everyone is going to like you, not everyone is going to agree with you. That’s completely ok. Remember the bulk of people who show up for you and love you for it everyday! That’s the reason why you do what you do – for the true fans who show up intentionally for you. And if you don’t think you have true fans, look harder. They might be people in the wings you’ve taken for granted.

Backing up slightly.. this post was inspired by a fellow business owner who was stressing about a bad review about her bakery. The customer basically rated her bakery 2/5 stating that the taste did not suit him. Fair enough, I say. It’s not truely a bad review. And there is probably nothing the business owner could do… except give him a tongue transplant?

 

Negative feedback that are neutral like the one mentioned above are like unicorns. There are plenty of negative comments that are emotionally charged, abusive, vulgar and hurtful in the pandora’s box that is the internet. Some of them are made by professional critics and trolls who do this all day… because they have nothing else going on in their lives.

Care about what other people think and you will always be their prisoner. (1)So how much time and emotion do you want to spend on these bl**dy slugs? I made my conclusion one day at breaking point that it’s going to be ZERO. I’m too busy being awesome, having fun and building my empire. For some of us, that decision holds up easily like a concrete wall and for some of us it’s a muscle that we gradually build up.

Regardless, the more energy you give to trolls and critics,

  1. the more they grow and fight back.
  2. The less time and energy you have to live your life

 

The worst thing about critics and trolls is actually NOT that they are damaging your reputation/work but that they can suck you completely dry of inspiration, energy and take you off focus. Letting them become a real distraction in your life can ruin your gifts and this reason alone is why I take a stand on learning how to completely ignore critics, especially those that may not be a good fit for your personality / perspective / business at all.

I’m not referring to the constructive criticism or honest personal experience type of comments and reviews from customers or peers. Some bad reviews can provide great insight to improve what we do, and it’s great to take those on board.

 

Taking a wide perspective, remember that every negative comment is just one person’s personal opinion. Yes, us business owners get sensitive about it because that’s not what the customer thinks. But learning to love and celebrate my haters & critics as a sign that I’m doing something right and making waves in this world has allowed me to channel my energy towards my craft and skill. Ultimately, it’s only through getting better at what we do that will being the avalanche of good reviews to drown out the bad.

 

 

 

 

The importance of finding Robin Hood – your sidekicks in life!

It was 8.30am at a Boost Juice stall that this idea first sneaked into my mind. I was up since 4am getting some business activities done after returning from my travels in Melbourne the night before.

My body was starved and dehydrated and the first thing that came to my mind was a chunky protein shake at Boost. So I went hunting when the necessary work was done and had the most refreshing shake that gave me the boost (pun intended) my body craved. But I also stumbled on a book on display by Janine Allis, the founder of Boost Juice.

I recognised Janine from Shark Tank and later come to learn of her business endeavours and success. I glanced through the book and found this.

Yeah, I totally felt that slurping up my morning juice. It’s kind of silly to think that a simple juice can make you feel so pumped. But all I can say is that biological need coupled with good branding can pack a punch to someone’s energy levels.

 

The other thing I noticed was a tip to success that she shared – to marry well or to find the right life partner to support you.

And I agree to a great degree that the right partner can bring out your hidden potential and assist in one’s success.. IMMENSELY. Though I prefer to think of it more broadly as having the right individuals around you to support you. Your better half is not the deal breaker in your success. Even if he/she is not the rock in your world, the power is still largely in your hands to believe in yourself and make things happen.

 

Personally, it’s about finding the robin hoods in your life – your true fans & supporters – whether they are direct family, friends, business partners or mentors. They could also be different people for different areas of your life. There are robin hoods for your relationships, your work/business activity, your finances… etc. and your ability to seek these people out, recognise them, build and protect those relationships can absolutely boost your results, fun and fulfilment in life.

I learnt from a business mentor that success is not created in a bubble and I resonated with that immediately. Being an independent character, it felt challenging to embrace that idea right away. But I knew, deep down, that it was the people by my side that gave me little nudges, or said yes even in the smallest ways, that allowed me to keep the faith & belief when the going got tough. Even when someone is not totally on board with your goals, ideas and vision, any expression of support counts to your morale (from my personal experience at least).

The right sidekicks and support mentors will add to your spice of life

Whether you’re shooting for big goals or simply trying to navigate through life, seek out and identify the robin hoods in your life. They could be someone you know, or be random strangers that become acquaintances. I’ve had such serendipitous experiences meeting amazing people and mentors just just by showing up and being totally open to what is available out there.

 

The Robin Hoods in your life are not just there to support you, they can also point you in the right direction or provide great ideas to solve your problems. If you go with that mindset when finding the sidekicks in your life, you can’t go wrong. I like to think of this circle of people as my dream team. I want to be a part of their dream team as much as I want them to be part of mine. It’s a 2 way street that sets the stage for amazing synergy, co-creation, creativity and magic.

Every hero has a side kick. Their powers are understated but they can be critical for you to reach new heights in life. Keep them close, cherish them, support them and they will do the same for you too.

10% Happier by Dan Harris – Book Review

oh gosh… I can totally feel Dan’s social embarrassment as he was discovering meditation.

I used to get weird looks (and be bothered by it) when my circle of friends discovered I had a business in personal development and was going to be heavily involved in the industry. In fact, I got a few smirks from friends as they checked out the latest book I was reading.

There is nothing more that I love than a very candid, autobiographical read splashed with dry humour. The human condition fascinates me and I instantly connect to personal stories. Dan’s book was such an easy read for me and I love it.

I really loved reading about how the light bulbs unfold in Dan’s thought process and life. Personal Development has given me some of those ah-ha moments. Having your life appear completely different to you in an instant just from one new piece of information is extremely amazing – and cool. It’s often unexpected which makes it all the more magical.

Dan, being quite the severe skeptic himself will certainly relate to those who are initially closed off to what the practice of meditation is and what it’s benefits are. His personal results and realisations make a great case for even the worst skeptics to be just a little more curious and open.

His frustrations and doubts in the starting stages of his meditation practice will also benefit those who are still finding their way around what meditation is and how is it supposed to work. I find that simple techniques can progress one’s meditation experience significantly especially for those who are not used to being self aware. I certainly took away a few of those techniques and strategies for my own practice.

I personally gained alot from the book – practical applications, insights into skeptics, insights into my own understanding of meditation, concepts & word tracks on how to describe meditation & its effects. I liked that it drew some relation to broader themes such as religion, faith, but not too much.

Overall, the book is funny and light hearted, which makes it more relatable to its audience. It can be a great gift for that meditation skeptic of a friend who is curious but may not have the guts to discover what meditation is all about yet.
